Water is at the heart of concerns in arid and semi-arid regions such as the Middle East and North Africa. The region is home to key transboundary water basins, but there are significant differences in the capacity of its rivers and groundwater sources to cope with increasingly limited water supplies. Climate change has added a further layer of insecurity, as it has contributed to increasing droughts, lower crop yields, and human displacement. Moreover, the challenges have been greatly intensified by protracted armed conflict and territorial occupation, as belligerents and occupying powers have deliberately targeted and weaponized water and civilian infrastructures, with grave impacts on water, food and health security.

To address these issues, the Malcolm H. Kerr Carnegie Middle East Center is organizing a panel discussion on March 20, at 10 A.M. EST/4:00 P.M. EET to discuss its recently published collection, Troubled Waters in Conflict and a Changing Climate: Transboundary Basins Across the Middle East and North Africa, edited by Marwa Daoudy. The panel will gather some of the contributors to the collection—Mohammad Al-Saidi, Elia J. Ayoub, Fuad Bateh, Muna Dajani, in addition to Marwa Daoudy, who will be moderating.
